Classes
Equitation (classes 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7)
The emphasis in judging this class will be placed on the performance of the rider. Competitors will be evaluated on their position as well as their ability to control and direct the horse in order to achieve the best possible ride.
More specifically, the judge will be looking at the correctness of the rider’s position (upper body, seat and lower body) and use of aids, the effectiveness of the rider in controlling the horse; regulating direction and pace. When evaluating an equitation class, the judge will look for a smooth, fluid picture of harmony between the horses and rider, rewarding the one who is quiet, unobtrusive and exacting in conveying their instructions.

Hunter Seat Equitation (classes 2, 4, 8, 9 and 10)
This class is divided into two components, both of which are to be given equal weight. As with the equitation classes, the rider (and not the horse) is to be judged according to the above criteria. The first component will consist of flatwork, in which riders will be asked to walk, trot, canter and demonstrate their two/three point position (depending on the level of the class). The second component will consist of riding a small jumping exercise in either trot or canter or any combination of the both.
Equitation Over Fences (classes 11, 12, and 13)
This class consists of a course of fences to be ridden at the canter. The class will be judged by the same criteria noted above in the equitation classes and has been designed to emphasize rider position, jumping style and control over a course of fences. The judge will be looking for an overall picture of style and technique. The winning horse and rider should present a smooth, fluid and effortless performance.
